She is Director of Liberty. She began this work in September 2003. Having originally joined Liberty in 2001 as In-house Counsel, Shami has worked on a number of Liberty’s high profile cases and has become a recognised expert on the UK’s anti-terrorism laws. Shami also assisted with Liberty’s campaigning work by contributing to the development of policy and strategy and regularly appearing as Liberty spokesperson on a wide range of issues. Shami Chakrabarti was born to Indian parents in London in 1969. She went on to study Law at The London School of Economics and briefly practised as a barrister until she joined the Home Office legal department in 1996. From there she worked under the conservative Home Secretary, Michael Howard who at the time was abhorred by civil rights campaigners. Chakrabarti became highly disillusioned and joined Liberty in September 2001. From then she spent two years campaigning against the increasing controls of the anti-terror laws following the 9/11 attacks in America. (Read more on emma.tv.
Shami Chakrabarti is also an Executive Governor of the British Institute of Human Rights, an Executive Committee Member of the Administrative Law Bar Association and Editorial Board Member of the European Human Rights Law Review.
