Adiba Kamiljonovna Akhmedjanova – Uzbekistan
She works for Sodruzhestvo, and for the Association of Women Farmers .
Adiba Akhmedjanova (born 1955) initiated the Women’s Club of International Friendship called Sodruzhestvo (Cooperation) to bring women from different national origins together and promote mutual understanding. Uzbek women from villages can meet people from other countries and become familiar with the culture of different nations. She also founded an association for leadership development for girls and the Association of Women Farmers in the Tashkent Province. She provides women with assistance in the fields of human rights, legal advice and help in setting up small business enterprises.
Adiba has been the leader of the Women’s Committee in the province of Tashkent for three years and a teacher for ten years. As a teacher, she attracted Uzbek young people to her seminars, lectures and meetings with Arab and African students, so that they could understand each other better, make friends and learn diplomacy. The development of personal diplomacy is not a tradition for Uzbekistan, and Adiba was one of the first women to use this method and attract Uzbek youth to the idea. When she became chairperson of the Women’s Committee she began to realize her main ideal: the integration of local women in the international community.Adiba K. Akhmedjanova was born 19 January 1955 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. She graduated from the Tashkent State Pedagogical and Agricultural Institutes. From 1980 to 1997 she worked in the Tashkent State Agrarian University, where she rose to Vice Rector. In this position, she guided the education and training of students and worked with foreign students.
She was a Director Deputy at United Nations courses on skills improvement for experts from developing countries (Togo, Tunisia and others). From 1997 to 1998 she worked as the Chairperson of the Association of Dekhkan Farmers of the Kibray District in the Tashkent region and created many farms in her District. In 2001 she was appointed a Deputy of Khokim (District Chief) of the Tashkent region and was elected Chairperson of the Women’s Committee of the same region.
She has been working in this field for almost four years and says, “It is here that I received the chance to realize many ideas and dreams. My most important goal is the integration of Uzbekistan women into the women’s movements of the world and to consolidate the efforts of women all over the world in their struggle for peace and against terrorism. The direction of social development is that of internationalism and tolerance. That is why one of my first steps was the creation of the Women’s Club of International Friendship called Sodruzhestvo (Cooperation), which aims to bring people from different national origins together and promote mutual understanding.
Partnership relationships have been developed with many embassies in Uzbekistan (those of the United Kingdom, Byelorussia, Germany, Malaysia, Republic of Moldova, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Egypt, Russia, Ukraine, the USA, France, South Korea and Japan), and with international organizations such as the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), the United Nations Women’s Fund (Unifem), the Conrad Adenauer Fund, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (Osce), and Handicap International.Adiba also created a network for Women “Woman to Woman” to encourage solidarity and sharing of experiences between women, and signed an agreement with the Egyptian Women’s Association for long-term cooperation between Egyptian women and the women of the Tashkent Province. She organized a new Center in Ahangaran City, Girl Leaders, and the Association of Women Farmers in the Tashkent Province. Adiba attended training courses on gender-related issues in the USA, Turkey, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Israel, and then shared the experience, traditions and achievements of the women from these countries with women in the province of Tashkent. She believes that the development of non-governmental organizations (NGO) is a powerful tool in the improvement of social and economic stability in Uzbekistan, which is why she participates directly in the creation of new NGOs and gives them ongoing support. Through her work, she has created a base for the development of mutual understanding, education, peace building, inter-ethnic cooperation, and tolerance in the Tashkent province. As a former leader of the Association of Dekhkan Farmers, Adiba knows how difficult it is to work the land and to grow and pick cotton. She decided to show what farm work really means to representatives of rich countries: She invited diplomats from France, the USA, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and other countries to come with their families and pick cotton in the fields. They came to the village and picked cotton together with the local farmers. During the break Adiba organized a quiz to test the guests’ knowledge of cotton. And at the end of day the diplomats told her: “Now we understand how difficult it is to make our cotton clothes and we must thank the farmers who grow cotton for us.”
Adiba tries to develop trust between different ethnic minorities in her community and organizes cultural celebrations with the local ethnic diasporas. Her colleagues say, “She is an example of honesty, tolerance, democracy and morality.”
Adiba has made many contributions to the mass media, including articles in The Tashkentskaya Pravda on many women’s issues. She initiated a permanent page « Woman, Family and Society » in the Uzbek Newspaper « The Evening Tashkent.” She has organized regular radio broadcasts on the state channel, Dustlik. She also wrote the scenario for the film “Irreversibility.” Adiba does not want to stop here. She wants to move ahead with new ideas.
