Personally, I just think women are far, far more interesting than men. It has to do with their immense layering, an emotional ‘nuancing’ that is the creation of millennia of facing up to difficult odds. Tarun Tejpal – India

TARUN TEJPAL is CEO and editor-in-chief of tehelka, an Web-only news and literary site based in New Delhi — and one of India’s most well-known editors. Since its founding in March 2000, two of the site’s stories have brought it international attention: its investigation of a cricket match-fixing scandal and its sting operation that exposed corruption in the Indian defense establishment.

Till March 1, 2000, Tarun was the managing editor of Outlook, India’s premier weekly newsmagazine. In an 18-year career, he has reported for The Indian Express and The Telegraph, and been an editor with the India Today and The Indian Express groups. He is a co-founder of the publishing house IndiaInk, which first published Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things. (Read more on SAJA.org).

Exerpt of an interview – Q : Your book has been called a complex chemistry between sex, ambition and love . What else is there in it? A: I think there is a lot of India in there. Bio: Tarun J Tejpal is a journalist and publisher. In a 22-year career, he has been an editor with the India Today and The Indian Express groups, and the managing editor of Outlook, one of India’s premier newsmagazines. He has also written for several international publications, including The Paris Review, The Guardian, The Financial Times and Prospect. In March 2000, he left Outlook to start Tehelka.com—a news-and-views magazine on the net that has broken ground with its sting investigations. In 2001, Asiaweek listed Tejpal as one of Asia’s 50 most powerful communicators, and Businessweek declared him among 50 leaders at the forefront of change in Asia. (Read more on his bio site). He says: I grew up all over India in Army Cantonments because my father was in the Indian Army. Among the places I grew up are Mumbai, Assam, Bangalore, Bareilly, Babina and Chandigarh. He said during a press conference – sachin: Mr tejpal sir, do u think ur exposing of the corruption in defense deals have brought about any change in the system ? Answer: I hope that it does end up bringing some constructive changes. My position from the very beginning has been that this story is not about individuals or political parties.
